Paint Man Pays But Has His Say

Ex-soldier gets 30 days for daubing Churchill statue

5th May 2000

The ex-British Army soldier who admitted daubing Winston Churchill's statue during the Mayday anti-capitalist demonstration in London, has received a 30 day prison for his troubles.

James Mathews from Cambridge told the court that his action had been taken out of well-founded belief that "Churchill was an exponent of capitalism and of imperialism and anti-semitism".
